 Stephen Emslie, a masters in engineering student, died of a fentanyl overdose in 2017. He had just submitted a grant proposal for his PhD, but the poisoned cocaine he used cut his life short. He was a brilliant friend, talented writer and aspiring rapper. Like his father and grandmother he struggled with mental illness; determined not to let it render his power. He wrote this piece a few years before his death, at a time when he sought treatment for his addiction.
