Jane Mulkewich
Jane Mulkewich is a lawyer focusing on human rights and labour law. Born in Hamilton, Jane has a wealth of experience in local community activism. She studied geography at McMaster University and later studied law at the University of Western Ontario. Jane has been involved in politics (as a candidate, party organizer, and as staff) and has held high profile jobs doing anti-racism work for the Hamilton Police Service and equity work at McMaster University. She also served as a member of the Police Services Board, and has been Chair of the Board of the Hamilton Urban Core Community Health Centre for a number of years. Jane is increasingly devoting her attention to writing, and her story about Sophia Pooley, a black slave once owned by Joseph Brant, was published last year. She co-authored a chapter about the Red Hill struggle which was published in 2009, and is now again writing about the Red Hill struggle of 2003, which was a milestone in her life in terms of activism on both environmental and Aboriginal issues. Jane has two adult sons, lives with her partner in Dundas, and is currently in-house counsel for UFCW (United Food and Commercial Workers).
