Guthrie Clothing
The Poetry of Phil Hall,
a Selected Collage
with an introduction by rob mclennan
[Waterloo: WLUP, 2015]
We think the greatest compliment a poet can receive is a review written in imitation of the poet’s form and style. Formally, this review is deliberately written as a collage; stylistically, the caesura is deployed in aesthetic solidarity with Phil Hall, the use of which seems to be his signature technique. One of the strongest impressions Guthrie Clothing left on us was its integration of macro- and micro-level collage; aside from the book’s being composed of collaged parts of previous books, each of Hall’s poems develops from its own collaging of language and images. Our hope is that layering our voices and editorial insights will contribute to the originating texture and its effects.
