Societal expectations—the rules created to more easily define and order day-to-day interactions—are inevitably reductive and tend to be a means to maintain power among a certain group. There is a reason that one of the first things a conquering nation attempts to take from a society is its language and traditions.

Cavar [sarah] || Sarah Cavar, Diane R. Wiener, and Sarah de Leeuw all address the politics of control through language and tradition. Although each work in its respective unity amounts to more than this reduction, the process and consequences of oppression are concerns that each poet takes to heart and challenges. Though very different in tone, each voice is compellingly strong.
