Susan Gibson Garvey has been active in the visual arts communities of the Atlantic region of Canada as an artist, educator, mentor, critic, and curator since 1975. Born and educated in England, she settled in Nova Scotia, established a studio practice, and simultaneously began her critical/curatorial writing career. Her visual art has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across Canada, reviewed in major Canadian journals, and represented in public, corporate, and private collections. As a curator, Susan has organized over 100 exhibitions for public art galleries in the Atlantic Region and beyond, and written numerous essays, monographs, and articles. At Dalhousie Art Gallery she served as Curator (1990-99) and Director/Curator (2000-07). She was President of the University and College Art Galleries Association of Canada from 2003-2006. As a founding member of the Halifax-based Contemporary Arts Projects Society she helped organize “HX”, the first Halifax International Exhibition of Contemporary Art (2000), and many other collaborative exhibitions and curatorial symposia. She has served on numerous provincial and national visual art juries, and arts boards, including chairing the NS Government-appointed Steering Committee to recommend legislation and programs for the very first Nova Scotia Arts Council (1996). She has earned prestigious awards, including the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts Medal for extraordinary contributions to the visual arts (2006), the Canadian Museums Association Distinguished Service Award (2010), and the Portia White Prize (2017), which recognizes the cultural and artistic excellence of a Nova Scotian artist over a sustained career.
