HA&L Biographical SketchMichael Mitchell (1943 - 2020)
A graduate of the University of Toronto and Ryerson, Michael Mitchell returned to Toronto after working in Mexico as an archaeologist. His writing and photographs have appeared in many national magazines, including Weekend, Saturday Night, Descant, and Canadian Art, and he has contributed essays to many books on photographers and photography. His book, Monsters, is a pioneering study of the 19th-century New York freak photographer Charles Eisenmann. His first memoir, The Molly Fire, was a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award and a Globe and Mail Top 100 Book of 2005. Final Fire, his second memoir, was a finalist for the 2020 Hamilton Arts Council Literary Awards. Mitchell was also a teacher and a busy commercial photographer. He was on the curatorial and acquisitions committee for prints, drawings, and photography at the Art Gallery of Ontario and a founder of several enduring arts organizations. Mitchell’s photographs are in the collections of Sweden’s Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Canada, the Portrait Gallery, and the Art Gallery of Ontario as well as many private and corporate collections.
