HA&L Biographical Sketch
J.S. Porter
Since the time of my hearing George Grant speak at McMaster University in 1969 against the Vietnam War, I’ve had a keen interest in his writings.
I wrote about Grant’s notes on obedience in Grail, edited by polymath Michael Higgins, and then in my book Spirit Book Word; reviewed Volume I of the Collected Works edited by Arthur Davis and Peter C. Emberley for The Ottawa Citizen; reviewed Hugh Donald Forbes’ George Grant: A Guide to his Thought for The Literary Review of Canada; wrote about Grant’s legacy and his friendship with Dennis Lee in Dialogue Magazine; interviewed Grant’s colleague Eugene Combs for Hamilton Arts and Letters and gave a talk on Grant’s concept of the Given at McMaster University.
On a personal note, I could not have begun this review without the encouragement of Lee Easton, Susan McCaslin and Marshall Soules. I could not have completed it without the encouragement of Art Davis.
